Research Training and Funding


This section offers information related to research training, which includes the names of awards that are administered by the American Psychiatric Institute for Research and Education (APIRE) and also a list of research fellowship programs that are administered by leading psychiatric research universities and hospitals.  The APA Research Colloquium for Junior Investigators is offered annually and the three research topics for the most recent year are found in the latest announcement.

Research Training Opportunities
– This section provides information on over 135 research fellowship programs that are administered by over 60 leading psychiatric university departments and teaching hospitals.

APA Research Awards – Information is provided about research awards such as the APA Award for Research that is open to senior scientists working in psychiatry as well as awards for both senior scientists and early career investigators in the field of health services research.

Research Training Awards – Information is provided specifically about programs designed to support minority medical students and residents.  This section contains announcements about the travel awards funded by the Program for Minority Research Training in Psychiatry (PMRTP).  In addition, information is also available about the summer research training experiences for medical students that are supported by the PMRTP.  Residents that are currently in training or Research Fellows that have produced a scientific paper summarizing work from a recent research study that was completed during residency can apply for the Lilly Resident Research Award. A total of five awards will be presented during the next APA annual meeting.

Research Fellowships– Provides information about numerous programs designed to support residents, postresidency research fellows, and junior faculty.  Trainees currently at the residency level with an interest in starting a research career should visit the Janssen Resident Research Scholars Program site.  Current psychiatry residents that are in their last year of training and are seeking a research fellowship might be interested in reading about the AstraZeneca, Lilly, and Wyeth awards.  Psychiatry residents that are members of a minority group and would like to obtain research fellowship funding might want to read about the Program for Minority Research Training in Psychiatry (PMRTP).  Research fellows that are interested in submitting a joint application with a mentor might want to visit the Kempf Fund Award page. 

Junior Faculty Support - Junior faculty members whose residency training was completed within the past five years also would be interested in the AstraZeneca Award, which is found in the Research Fellowships section.
